The Quality Water Softeners
Today people are concerned about the quality of the water they drink. Not all the water we drink is equal quality. How can you help insure that you are drinking water that is good for you? You can get a water softener system for your home. This system will remove harmful bacteria, ingredients, and some minerals from your water.
Manufacturer reputation is the single largest factor to consider; quality of manufacture means that the softener will work day in and day out. The next is to look at your budgetary constraints. Working within your budget, you’ll want to select the best products possible from the range of manufacturers you can get information on.A big driver on water softeners is how much water you expect to run through them. One that’s too small for your needs is no bargain whatsoever. Ease of setup and the ability to change filters and expendables is also an important consideration.
One of the better softener technologies on the market is the reverse osmosis system; it has advantages and disadvantages, and we’ll cover those in a bit as we learn more about it. Reverse osmosis systems have a lot of filters the water goes through to be purified; reverse osmosis systems are used by the US Navy to convert sea water into drinking water, for example. One for your home probably won’t be quite as robust. Residential filters put the water through a carbon filter (to remove certain minerals) a submicron filter (to remove animal and plant byproducts, including bacteria) and then an ion exchange filter which improves the taste and removes most salts, and chlorination products.
The major reverse osmosis advantage is the number of filters the water goes through in the system; this type of filter is used on the International Space Station to recycle water used for bathing – and from urine(!). The ones you use will be significantly less robust. The water goes through a carbon filter, then a sub-micron filter to remove particulate matter, and then an ion exchange filter to remove chemicals like chlorine and most minerals. This triple filtering makes the water much safer for you to drink. These water softeners force the water through each type of filter for its specific purpose, and you can get specific filters for specific contaminations that are common in the water you drink.
Reverse osmosis filters can be effective at removing bacteria and germs; most city water is already pretty clear, so the fact that they’re only 85% effective is probably safe enough. If you’re using them in the bush, though, you may need something more potent.
Many higher end filtration systems use activated carbon as a fourth step after reverse osmosis to try and get closer to 100% pure water, and reduces the number of toxins left in water (not that there are that many left to begin with in the industrialized world.)
This information will help you get the water softener that meets your family’s needs. You’ll be on your way to drinking healthier water soon.
Living in Minnesota I have learned the importance of clean, filtered soft water. There are numerous agricultural areas here that find it a requirement to have soft water for their houses. water softener mn Will help you to get the information you want to make an educated call.
