I have been writing on decorating a bedroom and choosing great bedroom furniture, to achieve the bedroom that you’ve always wanted. Today I want to look at one specific item of bedroom furniture, your bed. Because the bed you choose has a big bearing on the success of your bedroom decoration efforts.

And the bed you choose doesn’t just bear on the way your bedroom looks and feels, but also of course, and most importantly, on how you sleep.

The bed you choose and the bedding you choose to put on it determines the theme, or motif, of your overall bedroom. You may want, for example, a contemporary feel to your new bedroom. And you love four poster beds. A contemporary feel and a four poster bed may not necessarily go together.

So before you do anything else you need to choose your bedroom theme. The theme sets the overall tone of the room, and determines the color scheme, the furnishings and the bed and bedding. Now some beds are invisible, just going underneath the bedding, but some are not, and so if you eventually decide on an invisible bed the bedding will still have to go with the theme.

Remember there are many different types of beds, so you need to do your homework before you choose your bed. Many different types of bed are really just different types of mattress. An air bed is just a bed with a mattress filled with air which can vary in firmness according to the amount of air pressure inside. And that can be adjusted.

And a water bed is just a water mattress. I can testify to how good a water bed is having had my own water bed for many years. I can highly recommend them, my water bed produced the most comfortable sleep I have ever had.

Then there’s platform beds. They are just what they are called, a platform upon which you put your mattress, the mattress of your choice. So choose a mattress that suits you and you put it on the platform bed. For example you can put a futon mattress on a platform bed.

So when it comes to selecting the bed for the bedroom remember you have to make a number of choices. You need to select the look and style of the bed you want as well as the type of bed from a comfort point of view. And if you’re going for a regular mattress, instead of, say an air or water bed type of mattress, you then need to research some of the different considerations for buying a mattress.

So there’s quite a bit to think about when you’re buying a bed, and your choice of bed is a critical one to the bedroom decoration process, and one of the first things you decide on, after you theme. Everything comes from your choice of theme.
