Asbestos Surveying – A Crucial Process For Safety
Ever since the severity of asbestos related health problems has become known, strict regulations have been put in place to control its import, use, and distribution. All forms of asbestos other than white are forbidden by most governments. Even white asbestos is allowed only in some high priority areas. In the UK, the law makes it mandatory to conduct asbestos surveys of all buildings constructed or refurbished before the year 2000.
Asbestos surveys involve finding out whether there is any trace of asbestos in the materials used during construction. After the survey, it is critical to find a way to avoid contact with any materials that have been found to have asbestos. Materials, which are likely to degrade, are the most dangerous. It is ensured by these surveys that hazardous asbestos fibres are not let free in the air, which could threaten the people living nearby.
Asbestos surveys can be divided into three types. In the first type of survey, all areas of the structure, which can be reached with relative ease, are scanned for asbestos. It is taken for granted that other parts of the building could contain asbestos and thus people must not be exposed to them.
The aim of a Type 2 survey is similar to the first type, but it often features a detailed analysis of any suspected materials in a lab.
A Type 3 survey is more corrective in nature and aims at doing away with asbestos laden materials in the building. It is carried out ahead of demolition or renovation of a structure, in order to manage the rubble carefully without risking the lives of workers or residents because of stray asbestos fibres.
In the UK, companies that do not abide by the rules and refuse to conduct an asbestos survey can face strict action from the authorities. Besides, not conducting the surveys can also lead to a loss of credibility of a firm involved in the construction business, which might take years to repair.
